MUST TRY EDINBURGH EXPERIENCES & EVENTS
02 May 2017
Edinburgh is such a lively, cultured city, you would struggle to run out of things to do in a month here. But if you had just a single trip to enjoy some of those sights and experiences that define the capital of Scotland, where would we recommend? Here are a selection of must try activities and attractions, along with some of those special events that define the city.
Climb Arthur’s Seat
This famous Edinburgh landmark (above) offers commanding views and is a must visit site if it is your first time in the city. It’s also a great way to stretch your legs after a long journey. A great way to get “the big picture”.
See a Show at the Edinburgh Festival
This epic celebration of the arts draws visitors and performers from across the globe. Strictly speaking, it is in effect several festivals in one. Regardless of whether you prefer theatre and opera, or alternative comedy, music or dance, there is sure to be something outstanding on offer. In terms of unique Edinburgh experiences, little beats the verve and colour of the festival each August. www.edfringe.com www.eif.co.uk
Make Merry at a Ceilidh
These traditional gatherings are as popular as ever and an excellent chance to get a taste of traditional Scottish culture. The defining features of a Ceilidh (pronounced ‘Kay-lee’) are the folk music, costumes and of course the dancing itself. Never fear though, because even if you are a complete beginner many events offer friendly instruction, while good cheer is seldom in short supply.
Visit Edinburgh Castle
Conquering the castle is a must for anyone with a taste for history (Image: Edinburgh Castle Facebook Page)
Edinburgh’s Old Town is an inspiring place to visit at any time, but the castle itself is another of the city’s must see locations. Special highlights include the amazing collections of artefacts and St Margaret’s Chapel, believed to be the oldest building in Edinburgh. It can be mightily busy at weekends and public holidays, so if you don’t relish crowds, weekdays are recommended.
See the Edinburgh Military Tattoo
One of the most spectacular sights you will ever witness (Image: The Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo Facebook Page)
Speaking of Edinburgh Castle, those with an eye for a grand spectacle are also sure to enjoy the annual Military Tattoo. An epic spectacle of music, tradition and pomp, it is one of the most spectacular events in Scotland. Every Tattoo is different, making each show and each year unique. https://www.edintattoo.co.uk
Toast Burns Night
Held on 25th of January each year, Burns Night has a special significance in Edinburgh. Celebrating our national poet, this evening of traditional Scottish food, drink and verse is celebrated all over the city, including our own special longstanding event at Prestonfield Hotel.
Watch a Match at Murrayfield
If you have never been to Scotland’s iconic sporting arena, it is an experience to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Feel the passion as thousands strike up “Flower of Scotland”, cheering on every pass, kick and crunching tackle. We can often organise VIP tickets, too. www.scottishrugby.org/bt-murrayfield-stadium
