Pauillac | |||
Bin | Year | £ | |
115 | Château Batailley | 2012 | 130.00 |
5ème Cru Classé | |||
Once considered a bit of an under-performer compared with its more aristocratic neighbour, Batailley now punches its weight in classic Pauillac style. Young and focused with a rich cigar box aroma.
109 | Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste | 2006 | 185.00 |
5ème Cru classé | |||
Although eclipsed by the first growths and super seconds Grand-Puy-Lacoste epitomises all that is great about Pauillac. Drinking well now, this is elegant and mature.
111 | Château Pontet-Canet | 2008 | 250.00 |
5ème Cru Classé | |||
Pontet is one of the hottest properties in Bordeaux bar none and this superb '08 is a candidate for wine of the vintage. Rich and full-bodied with an abundance of dark fruit and lively freshness keeping things interesting.
124 | Château Lafite-Rothschild | 1997 | 950.00 |
1er Cru Classé | |||
Lafite has become one of the most traded and sought after of all the first growths, as the market recognises the leaps in quality made here since the early nineties. Lafite have produced a grand effort here, from the slightly underwhelming 1997 vintage.
125 | Château Lafite-Rothschild | 1990 | 1300.00 |
1er Cru Classé | |||
This wine typifies the style and complexity of a grand Bordeaux though still in its infancy.
121 | Château Mouton-Rothschild | 1998 | 1400.00 |
1er Cru Classé | |||
A great wine from an insider's vintage and probably the best Mouton of the nineties. Typically firm for the vintage, but with a super-ripe core of fruit now overcoming some serious tannin.
119 | Château Latour | 1995 | 1400.00 |
1er Cru Classé | |||
A magnificent Latour still in the early stages of its very long drinking window. Classically proportioned with everything in the right place, thisis possibly the wine of the vintage, as is often the case with Latour.
120 | Château Latour | 1990 | 1750.00 |
1er Cru Classé | |||
A monumental wine, just ready for those who like their Claret concentrated, yet suavely balanced. Classic Latour with the richness and power you would expect, now entering maturity with a great degree of elegance.
118 | Château Latour | 2000 | 2000.00 |
1er Cru Classé | |||
Once again Latour produces possibly the finest wines of this excellent vintage. A very serious Cabernet-dominated effort that is at the start of its drinking window (this is from the 2016 release).
122 | Château Lafite-Rothschild | 1986 | 2000.00 |
1er Cru Classé | |||
An awesome wine that is drinking surprisingly well given the rather austere nature of the vintage, in fact it's hard to imagine it getting much better. Massively fruity, with an almost regal opulence, with supple, rather than hard tannins.
123 | Château Mouton-Rothschild | 1982 | 2500.00 |
1er Cru Classé | |||
One of the greatest Moutons ever, still remarkably youthful and adolescent rather than fully mature. A rich and opulent, perfectly open now after a fairly long tannic slumber. |
Margaux | |||
Bin | Year | £ | |
128 | Château Kirwan | 2012 | 125.00 |
3ème Cru Classé | |||
A strong candidate for most-improved Château, Kirwan has proved to be a consistent best buy in Margaux for over a decade. Medium weight and savoury this is a decent example from this cool vintage.
126 | Ségla | 2010 | 130.00 |
This is the excellent second wine from Rauzan-Ségla; an estate vastly improved under the custodianship of Chanel. Properly proportioned from a vintage of the first order and drinking very well now.
130 | Château Rauzan-Ségla | 2005 | 395.00 |
2ème Cru Classé | |||
This is probably the first truly great wines to be made here in the modern era. Now up there with Palmer and Margaux itself, this is deep and powerful, with the sophistication expected from a Margaux.
132 | Château Palmer | 2004 | 695.00 |
3ème Cru Classé | |||
Palmer is a third growth usually thought of as one fo the super-seconds and these days produces wines to rival the firsts. A beautiful Palmer showing the great elegance that could be achieved in this very under-rated vintage.
133 | Château Margaux | 1998 | 950.00 |
1er Cru Classé | |||
From an overlooked vintage that has gained plaudits over time, this is a great Margaux. Medium-bodied, richly perfumed, this has a voluptuous touch; definitely not a tannic behemoth.
134 | Château Margaux | 1995 | 1000.00 |
1er Cru Classé | |||
After an inauspicious start, the nineties produced a series of decent vintages beginning with the excellent 1995. Margaux excelled in this year and this is first growth claret in all of its majesty. |
Bordeaux White | |||
Bin | Year | £ | |
143 | Blanc de Lynch-Bages | 2017 | 160.00 |
A very good example of the rare white from this rare white from this top-flight Pauillac estate. A fine pear-scented nose shows hints of citrus, with a lovely lively finish on the palate. |
Sauternes & Barsac | |||
Bin | Year | £ | |
147 | Château Guiraud | 2003 | 100.00 |
1er Cru Classé | |||
After a lot of time and investment Guiraud has risen from relative anonymity to become one of the finest estates in Sauternes. They are renowned for making powerful wines in a poised style, that even in hot vintages like '03 don't become too fat.
148 | Château Coutet | 2001 | 125.00 |
1er Cru Classé | |||
Coutet is one of the best estates in Barsac, whose wines have a reputation for a deft lightness. Showing well now, but with power and finesse that auger a long and bright future.
145 | Château Rieussec | 2011 | 160.00 |
1er Cru Classé | |||

Hospices de Beaune Wines
The Hospice de Beaune auction, established in 1851, is the World’s oldest wine auction. The wines sold come from exclusive plots of land bequeathed to the Hospice who in turn look after the vinification of the grapes.
Since 1999 James Thomson has been buying barrels of these exclusive wines and has made a selection available in his restaurants. After purchasing the barrels the elevage has been looked after by the historic house of Albert Bichot who are one of the great names in Burgundy.
