Frequently Asked Questions
You can find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions our guests have about our Afternoon Tea below. If you still haven’t found what you’re looking for, get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.
What is the dress code for afternoon tea at Prestonfield House?
Prestonfield does not have a dress code for our afternoon tea but we would advise smart/casual attire.
What is the best time to go for afternoon tea?
Afternoon tea at Prestonfield House is served Sunday to Thursday from 12 noon until 6.45pm, and on Fridays and Saturdays between 12 noon and 4pm. It is designed to be a relaxed, indulgent experience rather than a rushed meal. Many guests find the early afternoon, around 1:00–2:00pm, the perfect time, as it allows plenty of daylight to enjoy the beautiful historic interiors and garden views. A later sitting, around 3:00–4:00pm, is ideal if you’d like to linger into the afternoon and make it more of a substitute for an early dinner. During summer, later sittings are especially popular to enjoy the long evenings. Advance booking is essential, particularly at weekends and during the festive season.
Can dietary requirements be accommodated?
Prestonfield accommodates all dietary requirements. If you have any food allergies, please advise our staff before ordering so we can advise you if your choice of dish includes any key ingredients such as celery, cereals, crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, mustard, nuts, peanuts, sesame seed, soya and sulphur dioxide.
What is the difference between high tea and afternoon tea?
Afternoon Tea is a light, indulgent experience served from midday to early evening, featuring delicate finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones, pastries, cakes, and specialty teas and coffees. It is designed for relaxation and socialising in Prestonfield House's elegant drawing rooms or Rhubarb Restaurant. High tea, by contrast, is traditionally a more substantial evening meal, often including hot dishes along with bread, cheese, tea, and cakes. We focus on the traditional Afternoon Tea experience rather than high tea, offering a refined and luxurious treat rather than a dinner-style meal.
